The Doon School of Modern Agriculture and Forestry organised an academic visit to the Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun, on 28 March 2026 for students of B.Sc. Agriculture and B.Sc. Forestry.
The visit began with an engaging guest lecture on Taxonomic Identification of Plants delivered by Dr Praveen Verma, Scientist D at FRI. The session introduced students to the core principles of plant taxonomy, with a focus on identification techniques based on morphological and reproductive characteristics. Students also gained exposure to the use of taxonomic keys and their application in field conditions.
Following the session, students explored various museums at FRI, including those dedicated to silviculture, forest pathology, timber, and non-wood forest products. The visit offered valuable practical exposure, helping students better understand forest biodiversity, wood utilisation, forest health, and the economic importance of forest resources.
The Key Learnings of the students:
The visit served as a meaningful academic experience, giving students a deeper understanding of their field through direct exposure and expert interaction. Such initiatives reflect the University’s focus on experiential learning, ensuring that students engage with knowledge beyond the classroom and develop a well-rounded perspective of their discipline.
